Military insignia laser engraving requires careful artwork preparation when a design contains fine lettering, symbols, borders and multiple graphic elements. For this Ottawa project, the client supplied a green coated stainless steel tumbler and a detailed military insignia to be permanently laser engraved onto its curved surface.
Rather than adding a printed image, sticker or vinyl graphic, the design was engraved directly through the exterior coating to reveal the stainless steel underneath.
What Did the Client Want Engraved?
The client wanted a detailed military insignia reproduced on a customer-supplied insulated tumbler.
The artwork was significantly more complex than a typical name or simple logo. It incorporated multiple geometric shapes, circular text, a central graphic, smaller lettering and additional design elements that all contributed to the appearance of the original insignia.
Preserving those details was an important part of the project.
What Was the Engraving Challenge?
The primary challenge was reproducing intricate artwork on a curved coated surface while keeping the important elements recognizable.
Fine lines and small lettering can behave differently from large solid graphics during engraving. The artwork therefore needed to be prepared and sized for the available engraving area rather than simply transferred to the tumbler without adjustment.
The overall placement also needed to keep the large insignia visually balanced on the cylindrical surface.
How Was the Military Insignia Laser Engraved?
We prepared the client-supplied artwork for military insignia laser engraving and positioned the complete design within the available area of the tumbler.
The laser selectively removed the green exterior coating where the artwork was engraved, exposing the stainless steel underneath.
This process created the visible contrast between the original coating and the detailed insignia without applying ink, vinyl or a separate graphic to the surface.
What Was the Result?
The finished tumbler features a permanent, high-contrast reproduction of the supplied insignia.
The major graphic elements, borders and lettering remain visible within the completed design, while the original green coating surrounds the engraved area.
