Live edge wood engraving allows personalized text or artwork to become part of the natural wooden surface while retaining the individual grain, colour and irregular shape of the piece. For this Ottawa project, the client supplied a finished live edge board and requested a long handwritten-style message engraved across the wood.
The message, “Cheers to a lifetime of love and laughter.”, needed to follow the proportions of the board while remaining readable across a naturally varied surface.
What Did the Client Want Engraved?
The client wanted a meaningful script message permanently added to a customer-supplied live edge wooden board.
Rather than using standard block lettering, the design featured a flowing handwritten style extending across a significant portion of the available surface.
What Was the Engraving Challenge?
Every live edge wood piece is different.
Natural grain, knots, colour variation and irregular edges influence where artwork can be positioned and how the final engraving appears.
For this project, the long script design needed to be sized and positioned around those natural characteristics while maintaining appropriate spacing from the irregular edges.
What We Produced
We laser engraved the client’s custom message directly into the customer-supplied wood using a script-style layout.
The engraving was positioned to use the available surface while allowing the natural grain and live edge characteristics to remain visible around the text.
What Was the Result?
The finished board combines permanent personalized engraving with the natural characteristics of the original wood.
The script message became part of the surface rather than an applied decoration, while the grain, colour variation and irregular live edge remained visible.
The project demonstrates how live edge wood engraving can be adapted to individually shaped customer-supplied pieces rather than requiring a standardized blank.
