Photo engraving on wood transforms a photograph into a permanent laser-engraved image while preserving the natural character of the wooden surface. For this Ottawa project, the client supplied a wooden cutting board and a photograph of a couple to create a personalized anniversary keepsake.
The finished design combined the engraved portrait with the couple’s names, Damyan & Mali, their date, September 4th, 2021, and additional decorative elements and text. Unlike a simple name or logo engraving, this project required photographic detail, typography and decorative artwork to work together as one composition.
What Did the Client Want Engraved?
The client wanted a personal photograph reproduced directly on a customer-supplied wooden cutting board.
The portrait was the main element of the design, but the finished piece also included the couple’s names, a significant date, botanical details, a heart and commemorative text.
The objective was to create a single coordinated layout rather than simply placing a photograph onto the board.
What Was the Photo Engraving Challenge?
Photographs require a different approach from solid logos or standard text.
A photograph contains highlights, shadows, facial details and gradual tonal changes. When creating photo engraving on wood, these visual elements have to be translated into an engraving that can be reproduced through variations on the wooden surface.
Natural wood adds another variable. Grain patterns and changes in wood tone remain visible through the finished image and become part of the final appearance.
For this project, the portrait also needed to leave sufficient space for the personalized typography and decorative elements underneath.
What We Produced
We prepared the supplied couple’s photograph for laser engraving and engraved the portrait directly onto the wooden cutting board.
The image was combined with the personalized names “Damyan & Mali,” the date “Sept 4th, 2021,” decorative botanical elements, a heart and the commemorative message at the bottom of the design.
The complete artwork was positioned within the recessed area of the board to create one integrated composition.
What Was the Result?
The finished cutting board became a personalized photo keepsake combining a recognizable portrait with names, date and commemorative artwork.
Because the photograph and text were laser engraved directly into the wood, the natural grain remains visible throughout the design rather than being hidden underneath a printed photograph or applied graphic.
This project demonstrates our ability to work with customer-supplied photographs as well as text and graphic artwork when creating detailed personalized engraving on wood.
Can You Bring Your Own Photo and Wooden Item for Engraving?
Yes. Laser Engraving Ottawa works with many customer-supplied wooden items and client-provided photographs.
Photo quality matters. Clear photographs with good lighting, visible facial detail and sufficient contrast generally provide better source artwork for preparation. The wood itself, its grain, finish, dimensions and available engraving area can also affect the finished appearance, so each project is reviewed before engraving.
